charge. British commercial vessels will not carry

Chinese troops or Chinese military supplies except

with approval of Chinese Government and with consent

of owners of vessel. In general the treatment

accorded to British commercial vessels shall be in

conformity with that accorded in recognized inter-

national practice by maritime nations to vessels of

other countries in their ports or territorial waters.

The present authority of Chinese Maritime Customs

with regard to British commercial vessels, including

authority to search such vessels for prevention of

fraud or smuggling, with or without armed assistance,

shall remain unimpaired.
